Couple moving into The Banning.

Celebrating a Month of Move-ins

August 2, 2024/in general, housing & community development

This July, Century welcomed dozens of residents into our newly opened supportive communities in Long Beach and the South Bay: The Moonstone, The Banning, and The Cove.

“Working in affordable housing can be stressful but move-in days remind us why we are here and what makes our field so special,” said Heather Sharp, Vice President of Property Operations. “We hear a lot of grateful expressions and sighs of relief as people sign their leases and receive their keys. For many of them, they finally have a place to call home.”

At The Moonstone in Redondo Beach, 20 residents moved into a former motel that Century Affordable Development, Inc. (CADI) converted into permanent supportive housing using Project Homekey funds. This new community provides a safe, secure place to live for residents who have experienced chronic homelessness in the South Bay.

At The Banning in Wilmington, 63 new apartments opened for unhoused individuals, including those with severe mental illnesses. The development received financing from the City of Los Angeles’ Measure HHH and Los Angeles County Development Authority’s No Place Like Home programs.

Lastly, Veterans have begun moving into The Cove, our latest development at Century Villages at Cabrillo in Long Beach. The building provides 89 studio apartments for formerly unhoused and low-income Veterans. Residents at The Cove are part of a thriving community of more than 1,500 people who call the Villages home on any given night. A unique feature of the Cove is its bike repair shop, which benefits the wider Villages community.

In addition to developing these buildings, Century will provide on-site property management and residential services. The Century Oasis Residential Services team offers voluntary support and case management, helping residents address their physical and mental health needs, enroll in benefits, prepare for job interviews, and access other resources and opportunities. Meanwhile, our property management team ensures our residents have safe, beautiful environments where they are proud to live.

“Getting to this point took years of effort, fraught with challenges including unforeseen site conditions, torrential rains, and the sheer complexity of arranging financing for these properties,” said Oscar Alvarado, Vice President of Housing. “Now at the finish line, we are excited to provide dignified, supportive homes for vulnerable individuals for many years to come.”

Century is grateful for all of our partners, investors, and supporters who have made these developments possible. You have helped pave the way for our neighbors in need to achieve housing stability and begin the next chapter of their lives.
